Mystics in Bali

Directed by H. Tjut Djalil/Starring Ilona Agathe Bastian.Yos Santo

American Kathy is visiting Indonesia to study Leak magic, one of the strongest of the black arts. Having already studied Voodoo in Africa she is preparing to write a book on black magic.
After becoming smitten with a local boy Mahendra the two try to find a practicer of leak magic. Only after Kathy allows a mysterious picture to be drawn on her inner thigh ( by a giant tongue, no less) does the Leak agree to take her on as a student. As time passes Kathy is cursed with the evil Leak's bidding and soon finds she's not her self any longer. For one thing her head with her entire intestinal tract following will separate from her body and fly searching for victims. In one memorable scene a pregnant woman is lying in bed , when Kathy's head flies through an open window, positions itself between her legs and sucks the baby from the expectant mother's body.( This is a myth from this part of the world,The Aswang, a vampire like creature that eats unborn babies.) Kathy has also been transformed into a pig creature, ( you have to see it to believe it.)and a snake, but is now prone to vomiting up white mice.
With the help of Mahendra's uncle who also dabbles in a little magic himself, it's a cosmic battle of cheesey computer generated laser effects to over throw the evil Leak.
" Mystics in Bali" is a low budget, cheesey slice of cinema but a fun kind which dosn't seem to mind if we know that the flying head is rather fake looking and is just tied to an end of a string.
The two lead actors do what is expected of them in a movie of this kind . The characters are likable and we do feel for them , But I found myself questioning their motives occasionally.
The actress who plays Kathy (Bastian) wasn't even an actress, she was a German tourist who stood out from the Indonesian people and was asked if she would be interested in doing a movie. She was delighted, and the free extension of her vacation didn't hurt either.
The Director H. Tjut Djalil does an excellent job despite the limited budget at hand, having worked in television for many years he has learned to manage the little resources given to him quite nicly as this movie proves. He has also directed Lady Terminator and Dangerous Seductress, two other Indonesian genre films.

My Thoughts: This is some crazy ass shit, I loved it. The acting, special effects were so-so but the total presentation of the movie is one that will have you saying "what the fuck' many times over.

My Rating: 4.5 Go Go girls out of 5

    Excellent reviews.
What are your thoughts on the original "The Omen" with Gregory Peck and Lee Remick? It's one of my all time favs.

  2. Cranker191, Thanks for the comments, they are much appreciated. Perhaps one day I will do my own review for The Omen as it is indeed a classic. ( I enjoy the Devil- kid sub genre). But currently interested in the more obscure films that have had less written about them.
